Mine rescue

Location: Nova Zemlya, Russia

Local time: Right after the avalanche rescue is complete but in the proper time zone. (Iceland is GMT; Nova Zemlya is GMT+3)

Reason for IR to be called: a minor earthquake traps miners in a zinc mine by shutting down the ventilation and transportation shafts. As many as 50 men are trapped in two or three side galleries.

Personnel: Scott, Virgil, Alan, Gordon, Elise, Dom, Nikki, Dianne, Callie, Cassie and Brains

Equipment: TB1, TB2, TB7, the Mole, Excavator, Firefly, Laser Truck, hoverbikes, shoves, floodlights (anything else, add to the thread)

Posts:

1.The mine collapses during the avalanche rescue. The crew boss reaches the management on the surface, who call the Russian Army. The army can’t get there in any reasonable time frame, and aftershocks threaten to make things worse.

2. John informs Scott and Jeff of the call. Scott realizes that his crew is cold and wet and cranky, but they will answer the call once they are through packing up at the resort.

3. Scott arrives first and begins to liase with the mine management. It becomes clear that the miners are spread out and either they will have to dig to each individual gallery, or dig to one, and try to gather the miners together from within.

4. Thunderbird Two arrives, and both the Mole and the Excavator will be needed. A consult with Brains about the best way to approach is also necessary.

5. More detailed posts about the rescue – using the Mole, then the Excavator, as the Mole’s drill bit would likely cause more damage than resolve the situation.

The crew is wet, cold, tired and cranky, and tempers may flare. I dispensed with the protesters as there was no realistic way to fit them in.

If anyone thinks there should be something else, equipment-wise, please make sure there would be a logical reason for it to be in the pod, as they didn't know they'd have a second rescue. I know, the Mole isn't being used in the first rescue, but a plausible reason for it being in the pod was expressed.

Since we'll be phasing Nikki out by having her feel - after these two rescues - that she should get more medical training. She will talk to Jeff about it a day or so after they return from the rescues.

In order for this to happen, there will be a few serious injuries among the miners. They will include:

1. One miner has broken ribs, one of which pierced a lung.

2. Another miner has a broken femur (thighbone) and a concussion. He comes to on the antigrav and starts thrashing about, causing the broken part to nick the femoral artery and pierce the skin.

3. A third miner, who has a hidden/undetected condition, goes into shock/defibrillation.

Other injuries would include other broken legs, broken arms, broken collarbones, a crush pelvis, deep cuts, concussions, and scrapes.

There should be one more serious imjury needing immediate attention, that would stress the medical team, and cause Nikki to start considering more training. Any suggestions?
