Okay, gals. I forwarded the email that Robin sent me a few days ago, and since I haven't received any response, I thought I should bring the subject up here where we can discuss it. I've talked to a few other players, and they feel the same way she does. Our brainstorming sessions don't seem to be getting things accomplished, and we tend to beat a subject into the ground, then pick it up and beat it again.

Are the brainstorming sessions helpful? I'm kinda at a loss here; having a monthly agenda was supposed to help, and at times, it has. But we'll get something decided, and someone else will chime in and we do it all over again.

How can we fix this? Can it be fixed? What do you think? Let's talk about it.

I'm one of those who agree with Robin. If we want to debate on something, we need to do it, make a decision, and move on. No going back over it once the decision is made. It would also be a good idea to start a poll on the website for some things, instead of discussing them for some time.

The agenda is a good idea. But when anyone has something they want to discuss during the session, they need to notify one of the mods, so it can be included in the list. Or it will be included in an "any other topics to be discussed" at the end, once every other specific topic already on the agenda has been gone over.

The agenda gives us a list of things to talk about but it doesn't address the 'beating the subject into the ground' issue. I think we need to set some kind of structure for the conversations to solve that problem. Maybe something like - start the topic by doing a set time of pure brainstorming - throw ideas out without critizing them or discussing they're feasibility. After that set time, then we don't present any new ideas but discuss the possibilities already thrown out.

Also, I think setting deadlines would be helpful. If a pole gets put up - then say you've got such and such a time to weigh in. When that time comes up - go with whatever the pole say. Deadlines for other things might be useful too. Personally, I think we need to find a way to actually make decisions and then stick with it and move on not take months to decide on something.

This is from an email I got from Lauren. She gave me permission to post it.

As to Robin’s comments on the RP, she and I have discussed things along this line for a while now. I think, at times, the brainstormings are a great idea. It’s a chance for us to all get together and talk not just about the RP, but other things too. But sometimes they’re a real drag. I can’t really make it to them with the new time change, (which I don’t expect you to change! I’m one person, it works for the majority!!) but when I do come, I don’t want to sit there discussing what color to make something, only to have it go to a poll anyway. Some things need to be hashed out, like rescues, because we all have input that may affect it. The training fire scenario was a good indication of this. Sometimes things get all worked out and finally figured out, then we realize it won’t work this way. That sort of thing needs to be discussed. Other things don’t need to be picked to death. I don’t want to waste what little time I do have to attend, going over and over and over the same little nonessential detail. You are the game owner. Some things you should just say “This is the way it is” and not worry about what the rest of us think. If it impacts others, yes, then it should be discussed, but the shape of TB 8 for instance, could just be chosen by you or the other mods and shown to the rest of us. I know it wouldn’t bother me, and I don’t think it would bother most of the others either.

In my opinion, the brainstormings should be used to discuss things we all need to go over together, as a team. Like rescues, parties, all the things that all our characters will be participating together in. Also, things like posting and other potential problems, should be covered then as well. Everyone should be urged to speak up and not lurk in the background. I know lately I’m guilty of just that because I don’t want to make waves. I seemed to be the one (due to being a research and reality geek) who always threw the monkey wrench in. I don’t want to be blasted anymore over it so I’ll stay in my little corner and speak up when asked. Not trying to be a wuss, but everyone seems to be happy, and I don’t want to cause any strife.

Anyway, back to what I was saying. If we want to have a session where we all get together to just gab and have fun, why not have a chat instead of a brainstorming? And I think we need to go back to an agenda. Ask and post an outline a few days before, urging everyone to post an idea or two to be discussed, then get to it. Try not to spend hours on one unnecessary detail. Pinpoint what is the most important and start with that first, then move on to other stuff. The agenda items don’t necessarily have to be done in order after all. And if you don’t make it to a meeting (myself included) then you shouldn’t complain when things aren’t done “your” way. Like a friend of mine in politics used to say, “Don’t bitch if you don’t vote.” Yes, lives get busy and the RP isn’t exactly all important, but if you’ve committed to be there, then be there. Otherwise don’t cry over the decisions the majority has made.

We seem to finally be all getting along and having fun. At least I am. There are still some issues, people not posting, or not posting on time, not responding to polls, little stuff like that, but over all, things seem to be going well! I am happy to be back and anxious to get Luke and Elise back in there.
